I recently picked up a set of the “Great Books of the Western World” (1984 printing) still in the plastic for $50. I think this is a fantastic item to have in the library. Since most (if not all) of the works contained within are public domain I decided I wanted a digital version of as much as possible. this took me TONS of hours, so I decided I should share the resulting ebook collection. since I have the first version and not the 1990 second version, that is what I tried to create.my search led me to https://ift.tt/1NUG8pj which is a fantastic resource. using the links from this website along with https://ift.tt/12wFnkG , https://archive.org/, https://ift.tt/2yGMWHH , and https://www.loc.gov/ I decided I needed to build a folder structure that kept everything in the proper order as the books and I would fill it with the ebooks I could find. This process took a very long time, especially with renaming the books as I went instead of leaving them as found (ex 4lm3.epub). for standard texts I tried to ensure I had an epub and a mobi when possible. for works that had diagrams, math entries and formulas, I tried to get a pdf, with the epub and mobi when possible as well. some works that I found are better than the ones included in the GBWW such as versions of the Devine Comedy, and Paradis Lost that had illustrations.for the last volume (Sigmund Freud) I could not find many individual works of his, but I did find a Complete Works of Sigmund Freud and used that.key things missing:Volume 1 “The Great Conversation” is not public domain yet and is missing from this digital setJohannes Kepler, 1571–1630· Epitome of Copernican Astronomy (Books IV – V)· The Harmonies of the World (Book V)there are some minor works that are listed as “approximation” so there might be some individual parts missing.Hippocrates, 460–377 BC· Works (approximation)Ptolemy· The Almagest (approximation)Nicolaus Copernicus, 1473–1543· On the Revolutions of Heavenly Spheres (approximationBlaise Pascal, 1623–1662· Scientific and mathematical essays (approximation)In some instances, a complete digital copy of the whole volume was available on Archive.org. I included those when I found them. Some times that is the only file (such as volume 31), but usually I collected all of the individual works in a folder structure and included the whole volume file.all said and done I ended up with 600 files, 346 Folders and 3 GB in sizeI decided to share the output for any who want it, but please understand these are Public Domain in the USA, please verify compliance with your laws if you live outside of the USA.the set in its loose configuration is available herehttps://drive.google.com/open?id=1Gdr5ZlzwFUlmoFE_0X8xW6Y4H9bCx28Zzipped (100MB per file)https://ift.tt/2soOSoi the links do not work, let me know****if you find this useful and download it please leave a reply so I can gauge how helpful this was. via /r/ebooks https://ift.tt/2LPMQED
